Italy's artistic, cultural and natural heritage is inestimable. Combined with the richness of the landscape and eno-gastronomic traditions, this value could bring it to the top of the list of ideal destinations. In the world ranking drawn up according to annual visits, however, we are only fifth, with two European countries (France and Spain) occupying first and second place respectively.
Heritage and valorisation: critical issues
Exactly what is the reason for this position? The main criticalities that prevent us from climbing the rankings are basically three factors:
- the insufficient valorisation of historical, archaeological and natural sites (one example above all, the 58 UNESCO sites of which, however, specific studies on usability are lacking)
- the sometimes inadequate quality of the training of staff working in tourist-hotel services and cultural sites
- the lack of flexibility in terms of contracts and mobility incentives. This precludes resources, especially young people, from being able to move around the country because they are unable to find accommodation in their work destinations
Reversing the trend
Having analysed the restraining factors, a synergy between the private sector, public management and government must be activated to reverse the trend. Proposals to actively act on the weak points must involve
- the institutions in charge of the protection of cultural heritage, to conduct specific studies aimed at a serious and ongoing promotional campaign
- local authorities, to stimulate aggregation and promote territorial marketing
- schools (in particular professional hotel management institutes), to ensure the training of qualified profiles
- universities, to complement the work of the school in preparing future managers
- training organisations, to provide technical knowledge to non-specialised profiles and to facilitate integration into the sector
- host companies to facilitate the mobility of resources by guaranteeing accommodation and contractual conditions in accordance with the law
Know to promote, promote to grow. This is the recipe that can bring Italy to the top of the league table, but for which everyone's commitment is needed.
